All about the “Back To The Origin”: Paleontology And Archaeology By Bicycle.

    General Description

This is a splendid route to travel back in time to our origin and that of the planet; enjoy the landscape and the exercise by bicycle. The history of the Saquencipá Valley is wide and we can undulate in time; First we will travel to the 16th and 17th century to know first hand who the Muiscas were and their relationship with this territory, our place of boarding will be the central park of Sáchica and our time machine the material cultural patrimony that rests in the place, known as the doctrinal group of Sáchica and that is composed by the Stone of the Punishment, the Atrial Cross and the Doctrine Church, and that they transmit us what happened in that time, when the world of the Spaniards clashed with the Muisca world.

In this way, as we travel through the valley’s landscapes, we enter into a context with our history; but here time ripples, because it turns out that the history of the Saquencipá or Sáchica valley goes back millions of years, when the Andes mountain range did not yet exist, but there was an inland sea that harbored ferocious predators such as plioasurs, plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs and a great variety of creatures: ammonites, turritelas, bivalves, fish, turtles and other marine fauna of the time; crossing the valley by bike, we will get to know part of the Sáchica River and the Candelaria Desert, to get to see directly these traces of the past, which are a paleontological heritage of humanity; We will visit the Fossil Museum of Villa de Leiva, a community museum that has been in operation for more than 40 years, and whose main piece is one of the largest saurian chronological fossils in the world, surpassed only by the “Sachicasaurus Vitae” of Sáchica, which will soon be available to the public as well. The Fossil Museum of Villa de Leyva has more than 30.000 fossil pieces from 120 to 145 million years ago; there they will explain the existing exhibition and of course we will know the Chrono saurio, entering us in that fascinating and distant world but that makes part of the history of the earth.

We will program our trip to return to only about 2000 to 500 years ago, when our Muiscas ancestors inhabited this territory, we will see first hand how they measured time, their mythology, their worldview, because we will know one of the most important archaeological parks in Latin America: The Pre-Hispanic Astronomical Observatory of Monquirá or of the “inferno”. A set of monoliths arranged in such a way that the solar and lunar shadows could be measured and thus the cycles of these two fundamental stars, which marked the daily life of the Muiscas; but this archaeological park keeps more secrets, since it seems that it existed even before the Muisca culture, so it would be one of the oldest pre-Hispanic astronomical observatories in Latin America. You will be surprised with every story and explanation of the site, and we will dimension the great cultural and archaeological wealth that precedes us, and that is part of our identity.

We will visit Villa de Leyva, a Spanish town founded in 1572 and declared a national monument in 1954, because of its colonial architecture. Today, it is the most important tourist epicenter in the province of Alto Ricaurte in Boyacá; we will rest in its main square, one of the largest in Latin America with 14,000 M2, followed by Sáchica with 13,850 M2. Between these two towns there is a perfect cycle route to finish the circuit again in the facilities of Aborigen, cultural tourism in Sáchica, this cycle route has very interesting inclinations for a mountain bike.
